Should I Invest in TV, Radio, or Digital?
This is one of the first questions we hear from almost every new client.
“Where should we put our advertising dollars? TV? Radio? Social Media? OTT? Programmatic? Billboards?” Or is traditional media dead?
The honest answer is that there isn’t a single “best” medium. The right answer depends on your market, your service area, your competition, and ultimately what you’re trying to accomplish. And no, traditional media is not dead.
Too often, companies start by asking which media they should buy when they should first be asking what information they need to make the right decision.
Before building any media strategy, we recommend answering these six questions:
- 1. Do you serve your entire DMA or only part of it?
If you’re only serving certain counties or ZIP codes, your media strategy should reflect that. Buying broad market coverage when your service area is limited often creates unnecessary waste. - 2. What is cable penetration throughout your service area?
Not every county consumes television the same way. Understanding cable penetration and viewing habits helps determine how much emphasis should be placed on Broadcast TV, Cable, OTT, or Streaming. - 3. How do homeowners in your market consume media?
Every market is different. Some homeowners spend more time with local television. Others are heavy radio listeners during long commutes. Some demographics consume far more streaming content or social media than others. - 4. What is the Cost Per Thousand (CPM) for each medium?
One of the biggest mistakes companies make is looking only at budget instead of efficiency. If one medium reaches twice as many homeowners for the same investment, it deserves serious consideration. Lower CPMs often allow you to build awareness faster because you’re simply reaching more people. - 5. Will your campaign generate enough frequency?
One exposure rarely changes consumer behavior. Brand advertising works through repetition. We typically like to see an average monthly frequency of around five impressions per homeowner whenever possible. Without enough frequency, even great creative can struggle to make an impact. - 6. What is your current market share and growth opportunity?
Your strategy should also consider where your business has the greatest opportunity to grow. Are there neighborhoods with older housing stock where sewer replacements are common? Are there affluent ZIP codes where homeowners invest more in remodeling? Are there areas where your competitors dominate and your brand awareness is low? These insights help determine where targeted digital campaigns can complement broader brand-building efforts.
Knowing where your customers actually spend their time is far more valuable than simply following national advertising trends, or buying from the most persistent media rep.
The Best Media Plans Rarely Rely on Just One Channel
In our experience, the strongest campaigns are layered.
Traditional media—including Broadcast TV, Radio, and Outdoor—typically delivers broad awareness very efficiently, often at a lower cost per thousand impressions than many digital tactics.
Digital advertising then becomes the precision layer. OTT, Programmatic Display, Paid Social, and other digital channels allow you to reinforce your message in specific ZIP codes, target homeowners with particular characteristics, and support areas where you see the greatest opportunity.
It’s not an either-or decision.
It’s about using each medium for what it does best.
Don’t Fall Into the Attribution Trap
One of digital advertising’s biggest strengths is measurement. Clicks, impressions, website visits, and conversions provide valuable insight into campaign performance.
However, attribution isn’t the same as awareness.
Many consumers who eventually click an ad or search for your company were first influenced by a television commercial, a billboard they drove past every day, or a radio campaign they heard for months. Those traditional channels often create the demand that digital platforms receive credit for capturing.
That’s why it’s important to measure success using more than last-click attribution. Branded search volume, direct website traffic, call volume, market awareness, and long-term revenue growth often paint a much more complete picture of how your advertising is performing.
At LMBA Marketing, we believe the best media strategies begin with research, not assumptions. When you understand your market, your customers, your competition, and your media economics, you can build a campaign that creates lasting brand awareness while driving measurable business growth.
